A Few Words About the Exhibit

Kim H. Howard summed up her philosophy on painting over lunch one afternoon, "These paintings aren't about me. They're about the people in my paintings. I want people to take notice of these people."

Lurid colors combine with bold, close-cropped compositions to force the humanity of the paintings' subjects on to center stage. A raw energy emanates from the surface of the canvas - an artifact, perhaps, of the artist's passion for life. Like her favorite painter Chaim Soutine, she strives to make paintings which are both gripping and honest.

The effect of seeing her work is like being suddenly awakened. Life's colors seem more intense, existence more precious. Her great affection for those people who are often overlooked is obvious. The characters that populate these paintings are our fellow human beings expressed boldly, joyfully, and always, tenderly.
