I. BIOGRAPHY

Betty Gold was born in 1935 in Austin, Texas. She attended the University of Texas with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Art History. After completing her studies, she entered the tutelage and apprenticeship of sculptor Octavio Medillan in Dallas, Texas.

The sculpture of Venice, California based Betty Gold has received international recognition. With exhibitions in the U.S., Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, it becomes apparent that Gold has been profoundly influenced by a number of cultures. Her fluency in Spanish and frequent travels to Palma de Mallorca, Spain influenced a series entitled tiron, Spanish for "to throw," focused around the shape and movement of bullfighters. The dynamic folds of the steel in her pieces are intended to mimic a bullfighter’s cape. Elegantly angular yet constructed of hefty cut and welded acero or steel in Spanish, her accomplished works reside in a number of international public and private collections.

The artist prepares for a major retrospective in 2005 at the Casal Solleric in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Her exhibition of steel sculptures at Sullivan Goss was entitled Acero, or steel in Spanish. The maquettes, each a conceptual study for a monumental yet-to-be created sculpture, were created over a three-year period and inspired by the artist’s travels to Spain. Elegantly angular yet constructed of hefty cut and welded acero, the series represents the maturation of Gold’s interest in complex geometry exploring motion, space and form.

The artist's work will also be featured at the University Art Museum of the University of California at Santa Barbara from July 5th though August 28, 2005. The focused exhibition will feature Gold's printworks from the museum's holdings and selected recent maquettes.
