Colin Campell Cooper: Studies, Drawings, and Small Works
An Exhibition of Works Exploring Things "that must be noted on the instant."
February 13, 2003 through April 15, 2003
A Few Words About the Exhibit
My own work... reflects... my impressions of many diverse thing which I have found of interest to record seen though a technical training. It requires no key or chart to explain its meaning... " -- Colin Campbell Cooper, 1933
In contrast to the ambitious and complex masterworks that often grace wall of museums and prominent collectors, this focused exhibition presents the studies and sketches prepared by Cooper that draw from nature and the various sites and scenes explored by the itinerant artist. These modest yet striking works depict locals in Europe, Asia and the vistas of his beloved second home – Santa Barbara, California. They include academic studies completed at the beginning of his artistic career, while at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1883-4, and range to works completed more than fifty years later at the end of his life.
