An exhibition of contemporary Native American sculptors whose abstract sculptures call on traditional iconographies.
I. PAINTINGS - IMAGES
23. YOUNG MAN IN ARIZONA: Oil on Canvas, 34" x 22", dated 1913 and signed LR. Painted when Lyla Vivain Marshall (as this painting was signed) had taken the train West to Winslow, Arizona, traveled by coach for an additional hundred miles and then road horseback with a small band of Hopi Indians to the famous Second Mesa where she lived in the village for two months. She studied the Hopi crafts and customs and painted six canvases, two which were purchased by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. Private Collection.





27. NIGHT IN A PEACOCK'S GARDEN: Oil on Canvas, 66" x 48", dated 1927 and signed lower center. Fabled peper tree with its spicey fruit, this Garden has the feal of a cornucopia. Bright flowers, game and the central tree all form icons of a lost fable. Available.
