OPENING RECEPTION: 1st THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 2026 | FROM 5-8pm
Sullivan Goss – An American Gallery is proud to announce The Art of Collecting, an exhibition that delves into the intellectual and deeply personal journey of fine art acquisition. Going beyond the view of art as merely decorative, the exhibition positions collecting as a profound commitment to culture, history, and aesthetic appreciation. This special selection of works, spanning over a hundred years of art, highlights the fundamental relationship between the artist and the collector.
The exhibition provides an opportunity for curious art lovers to ask gallery curators about market forces such as provenance, artistic lineage, and critical reception. The gallery hopes to foster discussions about the complex ecosystem of the art world that includes artists, collectors, galleries, and museums and to encourage people to consider collecting as a process of curation, where they get to decide the relevant criteria. The works on view—from the historic alla prima oil sketches of Lockwood de Forest to recent works from John Nava as well as exciting recent acquisitions by Maynard Dixon, Patricia Chidlaw and Whitney Brooks Abbott—serve as a masterclass in the nuanced factors that determine an artwork's enduring value.
The Art of Collecting is part of Sullivan Goss’s continuing mission to make the art world more accessible for visitors and aspiring collectors. By demystifying the industry, the gallery aims to provide a clearer perspective on the role of the collector in the celebration and preservation of art, culture, and community.
